An elegiac reflection on Manastur – a socialist-era residential complex built in the 60s and 70s. At that time and throughout the 80s, when the second generation of socialist "subjects" grew up, this “cartier” or “banlieu” was thought of as a grey, depressing, poor, and underdeveloped community which housed over 100,000 souls. Most people living there during this time were “proletarians,” that is working class families employed in various factories or the public sector of the developing socialist state. Today, with most factories closed and the state ferociously engaged in a three-decade-long transition from a socialist to a capitalist economy, the area experienced a gentrification and bourgeoisification process that saw the gray walls of the “communist blocs” appreciate to rival or even surpass the real estate value of similar and better housing in affluent Western cities.
