Overview


The KingBonn Awards (Short Film Director Supporting Program) is an important competition of the China International New Media Short Film Festival (CSFF). Over the past 11 years, the program has received a total of 42,834 entries from 163 countries and regions. The KingBonn Awards (Short Film Director Supporting Program) is designed with Main Competition Unit and College Student Competition Unit. The Main Competition Unit is open to short film creators from worldwide and College Student Competition Unit is oriented to university students in China. The shortlisted directors of the KingBonn Awards (Short Film Director Supporting Program) will receive financial and other support for their future projects.

 

Selection Process


The selection of the KingBonn Awards (Short Film Director Supporting Program) consists of three steps: the sea selection, pre-selection, and final evaluation. Each year, the Organizing Committee will invite well-known directors, screenwriters, actors and actresses, movie critics, scholars, and industry experts at home and abroad to form a Professional Jury Panel for the selection. Hu Zhanfan, President of China Television Artists Association, directors Feng Xiaogang, Lu Chuan, Wang Xiaoshuai, Chen Kexin, Gao Zhisen, and actress Jiang Wenli once served as President of the Professional Jury Panel. The previous members of the Professional Jury Panel included directors Zheng Dasheng, Li Lichi, Zheng Kainan, actor Liao Qizhi, actresses Tao Hong, Liang Jing, Zhao Yazhi, Ding Liuyuan, celebrated British documentary director as well as the Academy Award winner Malcolm Clarke, DreamWorks Animation SKG, Inc. animation director Wei Zhaoping, master of special effects Richard Taylor in The Lord of the Rings, well-known French documentary director Jacques Cluzaud, and director and screenwriter Paul Brown, who is three times nominated for Golden Globe Awards and Emmy Awards.

The A Platform for Young Directors Growth


Over the past 11 years, many young directors have started from the KingBonn Awards (Short Film Director Supporting Program) of CSFF to a more professional and international stage.

My Dear Liar, the first feature film of director Shen Ao (his short film The Opposite Shore was awarded the Best KingBonn Short Film in the 1st CSFF) was released in 2019, and director Shen was honored with the Director Debut Award in the 33rd Golden Rooster Award.

The classic Chinese animation Nezha: Birth of the Demon Child, directed by Yang Yu, crossed the mark with a total box office of RMB 5 billion, which ranked third in China film box office history, and first in global single film market of animations by August 2021. His short film See Through won the Commendation from the Chairman of the Jury and Internet Popularity Award in the 1st KingBonn Awards (Short Film Director Supporting Program).

Gao Jun, director of Country Teacher, the Best Documentary Short Film in the 5th CSFF, was recommended by the CSFF to serve as a jury member of the international competition unit of Türkiye Radyo Televizyon Kurumu (TRT) International Documentary Festival. He was the first Chinese member of the panel.

Yang Xiao, director of Chronicle of a Durian, Best College Student Drama Short Film in the 8th CSFF, successively served as the executive director of Kaili Blues and Wild Goose Lake. In 2021, The Mountains Sing directed by him was awarded "Specially Mentioned" at FIRST International Film Festival.

Director Orkenbek Baysenbay served as a co-director in the TV drama Sniper which was released in 2020. His work Redemption was awarded the Best College Student Short Film in the 8th CSFF. Door Lock, his first feature film was launched in 2021.

Fall into the Mortal World, the Best College Student Animated Short Film of the College Student Short Films Competition Unit in the 11th CSFF is in preparation to be adapted into an animated film. It will be directed by the original director Zhong Ding and the director of BORUTO, Huang Chengxi who has served as a judge in the 9th CSFF.

Belgian director Sahim Omar Kalifa, after years of practice of short films creation, has filmed the movie Zagros in success. His short film Land of the Heroes was awarded the Best KingBonn Short Film in the 3rd CSFF and Baghdad Messi was awarded the Best Drama Short Film in the 5th CSFF.

Curfew, the Best KingBonn Short Film in the 5th CSFF, directed by Shawn Christensen has been honored the 85th Academy Award for Best Short Film (Live Action) and adapted into a feature film Before I Disappear.

The director of Dissonance (the Best KingBonn Short Film in the 7th CSFF), Till Nowak, is a digital special effects artist in Germany. He served as a concept artist in films like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Thor: Ragnarok, Black Panther, and Captain Marvel.
